here is the problem... first of all, you are giving and KJV slant without recognizing the change of language in 400 years. If you want to look at any lexicon you will find that it says "practices" or "lives in" sin.

This is from the Analytical Literal Translation (a very exacting word for word translation of the New Testament Greek):

1 John 3:1-10 ALT See what great love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God! For this reason the world does not know you*, because it did not know Him. (2) Beloved, we are now children of God, and it has not yet been revealed what we will be. But we know that when it [or, He] shall be revealed, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is! (3) And every one having this hope [or, confident expectation] in Him, purifies himself, just as that One is pure.
(4) Every one practicing sin also practices lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. (5) And you* know that that One was revealed so that He should take away our sins, and sin is not in Him. (6) Every one abiding in Him is not sinning; every one sinning has not seen Him, nor has come to know Him.
(7) Little children [or, [My] dear children], let no one be leading you* astray [fig., be deceiving you*]; the one practicing righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. (8) The one practicing sin is from the Devil, because the Devil [has been] sinning from [the] beginning. For this [reason] the Son of God was revealed, so that He should destroy the works of the Devil. (9) Every one having been begotten from God is not practicing sin, because His seed abides in him, and he is not able to be sinning, because he has been begotten from God. (10) By this are revealed [who are] the children of God and the children of the Devil: every one not practicing righteousness is not from God, and the one not loving his brother.

Be balanced Don... the one practicing sin is of the Devil... we abide in Jesus so that we don't practice sin. It does not mean that we never sin, if so then why did the say exact writer in previous chapters from this say that we do sin and if we say that we don't then we make God a liar? Why did this same author say that we have an advocate with the Father in 1 John 2:1 if we did sin. And in the chapter before that say that if we confessed our sin when we sin, that He would forgive and cleanse us... this is to believers.

1 John 1:6-10 (KJV)
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

1 John 2:1-2 (KJV)
1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

I like the KJV, but lets get real about it... you have to take scriptures in context and to say that we never ever sin is not in context with the Word in other places including in the same book that you are quoting. The original text reveals more and other good translations make it clearer as well.

Here's the Amplified: 1 John 3:6 AMP No one who abides in Him [who lives and remains in communion with and in obedience to Him--deliberately, knowingly, and habitually] commits (practices) sin. No one who [habitually] sins has either seen or known Him [recognized, perceived, or understood Him, or has had an experiential acquaintance with Him].

Hope this helps...

James

Philippians 3:8-10 " 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things [but] loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them [but] dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
