ON CHERUBIM: THE ATTENDERS OF THE THRONE OF GOD AND THE WORSHIP LEADERS:
Cherubim are called several different things in scripture (depending on the version). Sometimes they are called zoa (living creatures) or beasts (KJV), or cherubim.
GENERAL DESCRIPTIONS TAKEN FROM THE DIFFERENT ACCOUNTS OF CHERUBIM:
1. They have 4 wings (unlike the seraph who have 6 in Isaiah). On set of wings covers their bodies, and they fly with the other set.
2. Full of eyes all around (that might be a reference to the sockets that held the jewels contained in the bodies as given in Ezekiel 28)
3. They have an arm and hand under each wing..
4. Revelation describes them as having 4 different kinds of heads, but Ezekiel describes the same creatures, only as each having 4 faces... seriously.
5. They have the legs of men, but feet like bronze calves feet.
6. Their voices was sufficient to shake like thunder.
7. The creatures (Revelation gives a slighly clearer description) has one as an eagle, one as an ox or calf, one as a lion, and one with the "face" of a man. If you had the fallen cherub Satan (Halayl before he fell) in Ezekiel 28... he is described as a dragon.
8. They stand higher than the other angels around the mercy seat or throne of YHVH.
9. They lead worship and cry "holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty".
10. They are connected directly to the throne, as the seraph are associated with the altar.
11. In Ezekiel, you see the wheels or flying revolving discs directly connected with these cherubim... and the spirit of the cherub is in or connected to the discs.
12. From the elevation, you get the impression that these are the greatest of all of the angelic creation. This is further backed up by Halayl's description in Ezekiel 28 as the anointed cherub that sealed the sum (the greatest made... complete and perfect). As powerful as they are, they are still the servants of the Lord (YHVH).
Their likeness is shown on the sides of the mercy seat on the Ark of the Covenant, because in Heaven where God manifests on the true mercy seat, the cherubim are around them on the mountain of God... and cry holy, holy, holy... Therefore they are a part of the Ark of the Covenant on the sides of the mercy seat.
Most of the time when you see an appearance of the throne of God (with the possible exception of Daniel 7), you will see the cherubim with it... I don't know if you could call them the
movers so much as the royal guard or worship leaders connected to the throne of God where YHVH manifests Himself to the Host of Heaven.
But they also fly and are associated with the "wheels" or flying machines... but these machines actually have the "spirit" of the cherub in them... they are connected in some direct way.
Cherubim are mentioned first in Genesis, at the Garden of Eden. One with a flaming sword (once again, fire is put in association with these mighty angelic beings) is placed as a guard at the entrance to the Garden of Eden to keep mankind out of paradise. Genesis 3:23-24
The word cherubim is the Hebrew ker-oob, which is from an unknown origin. They are angelic creatures that bear little to no resemblance to humanity. They are very strange looking indeed, but if you ever make it to the 3rd Heaven, then you will experience them as the leaders of the worship there.
The following scriptures are some interesting and about cherubim being connected as the personal attendants to God when He manifests:
Psalms 18:9-10; Psalms 80:1; Psalms 99:1; 1 Samuel 4:4
And just as warrior angels and archangels, these angelic beings also have swords... however, this one is said to have a "flaming sword". A fiery one indeed. The flaming sword turned every way to keep fallen mankind from the way that led to the Tree of Life (I wonder where it is today?). Moses is commanded by the Lord to make 2 cherubim on either side of the mercy seat on the Ark of the Covenant. Exodus 25:18-20
And in fact, when you see prophets getting visions of Heaven, many times they see these cherubim around the throne. One of the most vivid and totally alien to our frame of reference is the description of Ezekiel of his heavenly vision including the cherubim. Ezekiel 10:1-17
Using this base text from Ezekiel 10 in KJV format, we will break it down giving the NAS format into sections and look at each section.
Ezekiel 10:1-2 (NAS) " 1 Then I looked, and behold, in the expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim something like a sapphire stone, in appearance resembling a throne, appeared above them. 2 And He spoke to the man clothed in linen and said, "Enter between the whirling wheels under the cherubim, and fill your hands with coals of fire from between the cherubim, and scatter them over the city." And he entered in my sight.
Ezekiel looked... in the expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim (the firmament)... was something like a sapphire stone (clear deep blue)... above them looked like a sapphire colored throne... a place where God localizes before His creation... the actual mercy seat.
This description of these wheels that they are standing on reminds many of our descriptions today of UFOs. They were standing on whirling wheels.
Now, there might be a real reason for that. Not the one that some who like cashing in on the "ancient astronaut" idea uses. I think that they have it backwards. It isnt that some natural aliens visited Ezekiel, its that angelic being travel in chariots or discs as described here... and at least some UFO reports are reports of spiritual beings and vehicles of the angels... both holy and fallen.
The coals of fire are between the cherubim below the mount of Gods bluish throne here.
Ezekiel 10:3-4 (NAS) " 3 Now the cherubim were standing on the right side of the temple when the man entered, and the cloud filled the inner court. 4 Then the glory of the LORD went up from the cherub to the threshold of the temple, and the temple was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the brightness of the glory of the LORD."
The cherubim were standing on the "right side of the Temple".
The cloud filled the inner court... the inner court of the throne room... the sanctuary. This is the khabod... or the glory of the Lord Himself being manifested before his creation.
The cloud... the glory of the Lord went up from the cherub to the threshold of the Temple.
The cherubim are accustomed to being in the flow of that glory... that glory connected them to the door of the temple. The temple was filled with the cloud of the khabod. But understand... that the cherub was in the midst of it.
The glory was shown by both "brightness" and the "cloud" at the same time. This is a pure manifestation of the glory of the Lord God Almighty!
Ezekiel 10:5-6 (NAS) " 5 Moreover, the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when He speaks. 6 And it came about when He commanded the man clothed in linen, saying, "Take fire from between the whirling wheels, from between the cherubim," he entered and stood beside a wheel."
