A STUDY OF ANGELS INTRODUCTION
KEY SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 13:1-2 " 1 Let brotherly love continue. 2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. "
Hebrews 13:1-2 (NAS) " 1 Let love of the brethren continue. 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it. "
Angel = aggelos (angelos) = a messenger or envoy.
Now some have said that this refers to the messengers or angels of the Lord as human servants going on a mission, but I think that there is a more fundamental possibility. There are biblical references throughout Gods Word where man-like beings that are not human with superhuman powers would appear and at times appear human, and be on a mission from God.
Here is a quick example of that :
Genesis 18:1-4 " 1 And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; 2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw [them], he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, 3 And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant: 4 Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree: "
Sometimes, the Bible declares, angels who come as men have been in our presence and even given us the opportunity to entertain them... but they are angelic beings and not men at all.
Many stories are told that are unexplainable by natural means how a person would appear suddenly and help out somebody and then just as unexplainably disappear afterwards. Some of these instances can be explained and many times God has raised up a person to be a help to others. But some of these cases cannot be explained as people disappearing impossibly afterwards.
Please note that this study is a Bible Study, and we will concentrate on what the Bible teaches on the subject. I will leave the various case studies to the authors on books on angels.
The fact is that from Genesis to Revelation, you see angels in scriptures actively serving God and being His messengers unto us upon the Earth. However, they tend to keep a very low profile and are careful to not allow any glory to be inadvertently given unto them. They are servants of God.
They are our allies in our spiritual warfare. An ally is someone who is closely associated for some purpose. Angels are our allies in that we serve the same master, Yahweh God. And God created angels long before Adam to serve Him and His purpose. So, it is only natural when things need to be done in the heavenlies concerning us that God would send His angels to help us.
There is more than one kind of spiritual angels. Cherubim, and seraphim and angels that look like men... some normal, and some gigantic in stature, and of course there is a hierarchy of authority among them... hence archangels, or principalities. Angels are referred to all through scripture, but not really in too much detail however. It seems that we get glimpses into their secret workings, but there are not many really clear pictures for us to just sit and study. It seems God wants us to be aware of them, but they are of a different enough order from man that he doesn't tell us that much about them.
Here is something to consider... the reason that we are not given a whole lot of detail is that they work secretly... quietly behind the scenes as not to take any worship or glory for themselves. They operate out of obedience and love for God. But they are very interesting, and a totally different order of life than humanity. In fact, there are scriptures that shows that they do not really understand us.
Although I am not trying to make this a science fiction, but technically, they are extraterrestrial entities. More than that, by the very nature of who they are and what they do, they must be extradimensional as well... that is exist in more than our 4 dimensions (height, width, depth, and time). They are celestial beings. They do exist in our 4 dimensions and in spiritual ones as well. For they can be totally solid and physical, or walk through a wall or move through the universe at mind bending velocities (if velocity is indeed the right word here).
WHAT IS AN ANGEL? The word for angel in the Old Testament is the Hebrew word mal-awk' from an unused root word meaning to dispatch as a deputy. It literally means messenger or representative. They are God's representatives.
The New Testament word is the Greek word angelos where we get the English word angel. This word means a messenger, or a messenger from God, or an envoy from God.
So the word angel means messenger. The Greek word is angelos, which means messenger, or one who brings tidings.
Also notice that in the Old Testament, many appearances of angels are created angelic beings, but some of the appearances of the "angel of the Lord" is not just an angel, but a theophany or an appearance of God ( the son of God ). Some of these instances are very clearly an appearance of God, but some others are open to debate.
The term angel of the Lord can mean one of the Godhead, God Himself manifested in a physical form that can be perceived by humans, or it can mean an angel sent for a particular purpose from the Lord. Also, the angels in the second and third chapters of Revelation over each church was the human pastors.... the messengers of God to their churches. So, we will limit our study to the created angels of God in scripture.
As far as the spiritual angels that were created by God (non-human), there are interesting examples of them... and descriptions of them... but there is more questions than answers raised by their descriptions.
Some Questions: Are angels genderless? Are they all male? How many forms can they take? What does it mean chariots of angels? Do angels have wings? Just how powerful are angels.
We will answer some of these, but others we simply have no way of knowing as of now.
