GENERAL INFORMATION ON ANGELS
From Wilmington's Guide to the Bible - some statistics and numbers: "The Existence of Angels. Angels are mentioned in thirty-four books of the Bible for a total of some 273 times (108 times in the Old Testament and 165 in the New Testament)."
Jewish Tradition and the Roman Catholic and extra canonical sources say that there are 4 main angels that are mentioned by name: (1) Gabriel, who reveals the secrets of God to men. (2) Michael, who fights and avenges Gods foes. (3) Raphael, who receives the departing spirits of the dead. (4) Uriel, who will summon everybody to judgment.
Now, the book of Enoch takes this even further and names many angels, but that is something for another discussion.
THEY ARE CREATED:
Psalm 148:1-5 " 1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights. 2 Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts. 3 Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light. 4 Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that [be] above the heavens. 5 Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created. "
Nehemiah 9:6 " Thou, even thou, art Lord alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee. "
John 1:1-3 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] The same was in the beginning with God. [3] All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. "
Ephesians 3:9 "And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: "
Colossians 1:14-17 " 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, [even] the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. "
Jesus Christ as the Word of God created them. This is made quite clear by this text.
All things including "angelic beings" were created by the Eternal Word (God). Yahweh made all including the angels.
Job 38:4-7 " 4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. 5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? 6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; 7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? "
INTERESTING: They were created before the earth and this part of the universe was created. For they were created and already gloriying God and singing together and shouting for joy at the creation of the uinverse! They were the first companions of Yahweh. And they are very powerful beings indeed, and they rejoiced at the creation of the universe!
THEY ARE CREATED SPIRITUAL BEINGS AND CANNOT DIE BY THE WAY... THEY ARE SPIRITUAL OR EXTRADIMENSIONAL BY NATURE. God made them differently and they will never die.
Psalm 104:4 " Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire: "
Hebrews 1:7 " And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. "
Hebrews 1:14 " Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? "
Luke 20:36 " Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. "
They are extradimensional or celestial by nature. They are mighty and no wonder they were called the bene ha-elohim (sons of God). They are separated by scripture clearly from the only begotten Son of God, or as we in the New Covenant are the sons of God. They were called that showing their power in their creation. But they can be invisible or visible depending on the need, and with spiritual discernment at times they can even be seen spiritually without the natural eye.
2 Kings 6:15-18 " 15 And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? 16 And he answered, Fear not: for they that [be] with us [are] more than they that [be] with them. 17 And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain [was] full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. 18 And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha. "
There was a company of warrior angels there invisible to the naked eye. The prophet could see them with God's help, but to the naked eye they were invisible. However, their presence was felt at the blinding of the Syrian Army.
HOW MANY OF THEM ARE THERE?
An innumerable amount as shown by the descriptions in the Bible as to their number. Referencing Revelation 12, we see that 2/3 of all created angels are still holy and in service to God.
Revelation 12:3-4 "3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born ".
Revelation 5:11 " And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; "
This is pretty clear... myriads of myriads is the actual Greek wording... an innumerable host. Here are some other examples of the great numbers of the Lord's angels.
Psalm 68:17 " The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place. "
Psalm 148:2 " Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts. "
2 Chronicles 18:18 " Again he said, Therefore hear the word of the Lord; I saw the Lord sitting upon his throne, and all the host of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left. "
The word "hosts" is used there. Hosts is the Hebrew tsaba', which is an organized army for war. The Lord of Hosts is one of the titles for God! He literally has hosts of angels at His command throughout this universe. Look at the immensity of the universe and you have an idea of the angelic hosts that watch over it. Earth is only a part of this wonderful creation of God. This same wording is used in the exhortation of the angels to worship Him here: Psalm 103:20-21 " 20 Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. 21 Bless ye the Lord, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure. "
Daniel 7:10 " A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. "
Matthew 26:53 " Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? "
Hebrews 12:22 " But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, "
THEY ARE MORE POWERFUL THAN MAN (WELL, MAN AS HE IS IN THE FLESH NOW IN HIS FALLEN STATE ):
The reality is that man has something in him that angels do not have. God breathed the breath (ruwach) of life into Adam and Adam became a living soul and a reflection of God's glory. Man is different than all other creation because of this. Although angels by their extradimensional nature are more powerful than man since we are limited to this 4 dimensional body (height, width, depth, and time), mankind is different and has that which angels do not have. Also, it is stated that angels are curious about our walk of Grace with God through Jesus Christ. If man had not fallen to sin, it would astound you what we would have been. The fall did much damage to mankind that definitely put us under angels... for now. Later as Saints, things change in that glorified with Jesus state.
Psalm 8:4-5 " 4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? 5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. "
Hebrews 2:6-11 " 6 But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? 7 Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: 8 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. 10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, "
