Westboro Baptist Church

First of all, most people know that these people are not only not Christlike and disobeying the majority of the Word of God in trying to expose the sin of others and ignoring their own, but they have just enough truth in what they spout off to fool those who might not be biblically based. Plus, they have a way of making all Christians basically look bad. They are a smear on Jesus and the gospel. Their doctrine is based on hyper-Calvinism, which we shall explore in a moment.

Not only is Westboro opposed by supporters of gay rights, but the vast majority of Christian groups (even those who agree with Westboro that homosexuality is a sin) oppose Westboro's theology and practice, believing it to be incompatible with authentic Christian teachings.

The truth is that homosexuality is an abomination to God. The Bible is clear about that. But nowhere does it tell us to act like rabid animals in venting hatred to them. Also, it does not tell us to attack our authorities and vent hatred toward our nation for any compromise with this one sin. There are two major problems outside of the basic doctrinal ones at Westboro. One is the absolute total lacking of love in their preaching and approach that creates strife and not conviction, and the other is their inability to see any other sin including their own open sin in their methods in attacking this one issue. There is more wrong than just homosexuality in the world. That is but one iniquity. The Bible lists a number of others.

Some quick points about the agape love of God that we will have if we are walking in the Spirit (it is given as part of the fruit of the Spirit.

Love... is patient and kind and endures long... in other words, its not quick tempered and hateful. Its loving and kind (I take it that tormenting the widows and surviving children at a funeral for killed servicemen by rejoicing at their deaths is a kindness in their eyes).
Love... isn't jealous or boastful of your own righteousness or goodness or abilities... doesn't lift up yourself, but lifts up God and edifies others.
Love... doesn't display itself as haughty... arrogant... puffed up.
Love... doesn't rejoice at evil or injustice (they have that part perhaps in one way). Love rejoices when truth and righteousness prevails (yeah, but they are rejoicing even when innocent people are wounded and killed... in fact, they are rejoicing at the woes of others... something the Lord told us not to do).
Love... is ready to believe the best of every person (Woah now... it does?).


Westboro's main website ( www.godhatesfags.com ) tells us quite a bit about their twisted belief system. They tell us that God hates anyone who is not the "elect". In other words, they believe in Calvin's TULIP 5 points of Calvinism including unconditional election and irresistable grace. In other words, God has chosen who He wants to love and they have no choice but to become saved and those who He wants to hates and they will be damned no matter what they want to do. He chooses he elect and we have nothing to do with it. Therefore, its okay to hate "fags" as they say and anyone else who does not believe their hyper-calvinist doctrine since they are not the elect and hated of God. THIS IS TOTALLY UNBIBLICAL.

IT IS NOT GOD'S DESIRE THAT ANY SHOULD PERISH BUT ALL SHOULD COME TO REPENTANCE. They won't, but it is God's desire and Jesus died and paid the price for everyone if they take advantage of that or not. This doctrine takes certain scriptures out of context with the rest of God's Word and totally ignores many scriptures that defy their viewpoint.

Ephesians 2:12 (KJV) That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

UNDERSTAND THIS... THERE IS SOME TRUTH TO SOME OF THE THINGS THAT THEY SAY, BUT THEY SAY IT DEVOID OF ANY LOVE OR DESIRE TO SEE PEOPLE REPENT... THEY REJOICE IN CALAMITIES. Here is a REALITY CHECK: We are to hate sin... I mean we are to hate sin like God hates sin, but we are to reach out to the sinner and seem them as the victim of their own lusts and also the devil and reach out to them with the gospel of hope! We are to understand that God so loved the world and that He desires that none perish and He loves that person in gross sin just like you and if it were not for the grace of God, you could be in a similar state yourself. Have compassion and try to reach them while that you can. Reach them while they have a chance to find God in grace, instead of rejecting Jesus and waiting too late and knowing Him in His judgment. They are already because of sin, under the wrath of God, but God loved them enough to send His Son for them as well... just like you and me!

WE ARE NOT TO REJOICE IN THE CALAMITIES OF OTHERS! WE WILL BE PUNISHED BY GOD IF WE DO.

We are to love and do good to all men... especially of those in the faith, but to all men as well if they are in the faith or not. We are to love our neighbor... as ourselves. It doesn't matter if our neighbor is a prophet of God or a prostitute. We are to love them, and we will if the love of God is flowing through us.

RELIGIOUS HATRED IS SICKNESS. IT IS A SLAP AGAINST GOD AND WHAT JESUS DID ON THE CROSS. IT IS THE KIND OF ABOMINATION THAT GAVE BIRTH TO THE CRUSADES OR BLEW UP THE WORLD TRADE CENTER. GOD HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

We should not be happy that someone is reaping what they sowed... but we should rejoice at "godly sorrow" that brings repentance. We don't rejoice that they are going through a bad time, but in the knowledge that God is using it to bring them into a right relationship with Him! We are to sorrow with those who sorrow. It is not right to rejoice and build markers rejoicing that someone (in their judgment) is in Hell now. It breaks my heart that any would perish. There is a godly sorrow that we can rejoice when it comes because it works repentance and a change! 2 Corinthians 7:9-10 (KJV) " 9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. 10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Romans 12:12-15 (KJV)12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; 13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. 14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. 15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

The problem with talking about Westboro Baptist Church is that we could get into an intense Bible Study over the Antichristian and Antibiblical Works that they do outwardly for the world to see. Its almost like... "hey, we are not only full of hatred for God, but we want the whole world to know as a witness because we are like living examples of religious spite to the world bearing witness against them!"

THEIR WATERS ARE BITTER... THEIR FRUIT IS ROTTEN... USING BIBLICAL STANDARDS. Matthew 7:17-23 (KJV) " 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. When you watch one of the representatives of Westboro Baptist (usually one of Pastor Phelps relatives), the pure rabid hatred shoots out at you. They rejoice at the death of American servicemen because they think that somehow homosexuality in America caused it. They have a website that says God hates America... and more for other countries as well. They seem to live in the hatred... a religious hatred. In fact, their hatred is on the level of some fundamentalist Muslim Terrorists. They have not performed terrorist acts of violence, but they have wounded many hurting people who have lost loved ones.

Some parts of their website say that homosexuals are reprobates and cannot be saved, and yet other parts talk to saving them. They seem a bit confused at times. Understand this, God does hate any immoral sin and homosexuality was so rampant in Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities of the plain that God rained fire on them... when He could not find 10 righteous people in all of those cities. It is a serious iniquity that destroys lives. And it is according to Romans 1 connected into an idolatrous generation and people being turned into reprobate minds. See, there are slivers of truth in their doctrines here and there. BUT, God reaches out to all... and I have known of those in very immoral lifestyles to be set free by the power of God when they called out on Jesus Christ, and the love of God was poured out on them. GOD WOULD MUCH RATHER GIVE YOU HIS LOVE THEN YOU FORCE HIM TO SHOW YOU HIS WRATH.

Read James about strife. These people even on CNN and Fox Network enjoy strife and are very violently hateful in their declarations. Where is the love of God in what they are doing? According to them, the love is only given to those who are the irresistably the elect of God. In other words, if you agree with their hyper-calvinistic doctrine, then you deserve their love but not otherwise. If you belong to another group, then you can't be a true Christian. I watched Rev. Phelps daughter in law tell several she was talking to that they weren't Christians after they said that they were. WHO IS SHE TO JUDGE THAT?

HONESTLY, I AM NOT TRYING TO JUDGE THEIR SALVATION AND THANK GOD I DON'T HAVE TO... BUT WE ARE TO GIVE A RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT ON THAT WHICH IS TAUGHT AND PREACHED BY PEOPLE WITH THE WORD OF GOD AS THE MARK OF TRUTH! In fact, we are to judge what is preached and prophesied, and in these days we had better take very much care that what they are doing and saying is backed by God's Word. And if it is not then we need to mark it and depart from it.

There will be many who will say, "did I not preach in your name..." and the like, and God will tell them that He NEVER knew them. They were religious, but they never had the new birth.

One thing for sure, if we are truly God's people and walking in the Spirit, then the fruit of the Spirit will be a part of our lives and season what we are saying and doing.

In Galatians 5, we see how that the world is in the works of the flesh, and how that the people of God are who walk in the Spirit. The way to keep the works of the flesh out of our lives is to walk in the Spirit.

QUESTION: Are the members of Westboro Baptist Church presenting a witness that is seasoned with the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT? Or are the works of the flesh involved in the hateful things that they do?

Galatians 5:13-16 (KJV) " 13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. 16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. "

Once again, going into this... love your neighbor as yourself. Don't bite and devour one another... don't give into this kind of behaviour.

Galatians 5:19-20 (KJV) " 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, "

Galatians 5:19-20 (Amplified) " 19 Now the doings (practices) of the flesh are clear (obvious): they are immorality, impurity, indecency,
20 Idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger (ill temper), selfishness, divisions (dissensions), party spirit (factions, sects with peculiar opinions, heresies), "

Notice.... the immorality and impurity (fornicationa nd uncleanness) that they center in on is mentioned and it is evil. But going on to verse 20, enmity and strife and anger or wrath and even heresies are a good description of Westboro Baptist's behaviour and beliefs. WHY DO THEY CENTER IN ON OTHER'S SINS AND IGNORE THEIR OWN? HOW CAN THEY TALK ABOUT THE ONE AND ACT SO MUCH LIKE THE WORLD IN FULFILLING THE LUSTS OF THE FLESH IN THEIR HATRED AND WRATH TOWARD MEN?

We overcome those lusts (both the sexual immoral ones and the ones dealing with things like strife and wrath and hatred) by walking in the Spirit... and the Holy Spirit brings the fruit of the Spirit out of our lives. We will be known by the fruit that we bear.

Galatians 5:22-25 (KJV) " 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. "

Galatians 5:22-25 (Amplified) " 22 But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness,
23 Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law [that can bring a charge].
24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus (the Messiah) have crucified the flesh (the godless human nature) with its passions and appetites and desires.

LOVE - this one is enough to stop the very ungodly hate tactics of their demonstrations. We could add peace and goodness and kindness to those as well, but love by itself would be enough.


THINK ON THIS: The world is trying to outlaw the Bible and we who believe it because they claim that we are intolerant and that its hate literature. The truth is that GOD IS INTOLERANT TO SIN. AND WE ARE TO BE INTOLERANT TO SIN. BUT WE ARE TO LOVE THE SINNNERS AND GIVE THEM THE HOPE OF THE GOSPEL.

Its hard to show the love of God to the world while we are hating them. GROUPS LIKE this give the enemies of the Cross ammunition to attack all of us who call on the name of Jesus Christ. The world loves the controversy of fixating on people who are on the fringe like this and claiming that we are all like this. IT IS A PURE LIE, BUT THE WORLD IS USED TO LYING AND BELIEVING LIES.

Westboro has a bad witness for Jesus... its sad, but true. And its a bad witness on all Christian groups. The Bible declares that Jesus was the friend to sinners and came to seek and save the sinner. He did not come to badmouth them or use insults which by the way the Bible tells us not to do. WE ARE TO BE SALT AND LIGHT AND SEASONED WITH THE LOVE AND POWER OF GOD.

Westboro has nothing to do with any other group that calls itself Baptist. I don't know of any other Baptist group that would agree with their doctrine or practices.

It is the world's preoccupation with controversy that has given them the press that they have had. They have a congregation of under 100, and yet they are on the news regularly from the outrageously hurtful things that they do to others, and the news media continues to give them a voice. They are kind of like a bully that if they were ignored long enough, they would go into their corner and sulk. But the news media uses them to throw stones on those who are really Christlike.

If God hates homosexuals as a group, why do you sometimes aim signs at individual people, not at the group? How can you say that an individual is in hell? What do you think of Jews? As the Apostle Paul (who himself was a Jew) teaches in this verse, the only true Jews are Christians. The rest of the people who claim to be Jews aren't, and they are nothing more than typical, impenitent sinners, who have no Lamb. You may have a Jewish heritage, but that doesn't make you a true Jew in the spirit; that only makes you a Jew in the flesh. As evidence of their apostasy, the vast majority of Jews support fags.

Do you follow ALL of the laws in the Mosaic Code, or do you just pick and choose those that denounce homosexuals, while ignoring the others? The Mosaic Code consists of two types of laws: moral and ceremonial.

Why do you fly the American flag upside down? An upside down flag is the international sign for distress.

What ways have you found to spread your message? Our primary method of spreading our message is through picketing.

Why do you picket soldiers' funerals? These turkeys are not heroes. They are lazy, incompetent idiots looking for jobs because they're not qualified for honest work.

They were raised on a steady diet of fag propaganda in the home, on TV, in church, in school, in mass media - everywhere - the two-pronged lie: 1) It's OK to be gay; and, 2) Anyone saying otherwise, like WBC, is a hatemonger who must be vilified, demonized, marginalized into silence. THE PHARISEES THAT JESUS UPBRAIDED HAD SIMILAR ATTITUDES... OF SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS AND JUDGMENT FOR ALL OTHERS UNLIKE THEIR OWN GROUP. Jesus said that they had paid attention to their own points, but had totally missed the weightier matters of the Law such as love.

The sad thing is that there are slivers of truth here and there, but they are blended in with their own form of hateful tradition. The doctrinal stand that this group makes is based on a number of scriptures taken totally out of context and totally without the love of God giving it power. The letter without the Spirit brings death... and that is what this hateful doctrine brings, death.

I could go on about their methods being unbiblical or their attitude toward their leaders that God has ordained or their rejoicing in the pain of others and the lack of love shown, but I will be doing this for weeks to come if I go much further.

NOT ONLY do they take scripture so out of context as to totally twist the meanings to fit their own hateful worldview, but their approach would repel most sinners away from Jesus and repentance. Very few sane people would receive this as an attempt of God to reach them for salvation. It sounds more like pure hate rhetoric than anything else. They do preach "another gospel", but honestly I would not call what they preach any kind of gospel. The gospel is the "good news", and there is no good news in their teachings unless you are a hyper-calvinist and deemed superiour by God to be over the rest of the sinners.

They point out the sin of homosexuality so vividly and yet say that most likely those involved in that sin are reprobates and can't be saved anyway. Then why preach to them if they can't be saved? It seems like lunacy when you look it over. But there must be some kind of demonic religious spirit attached to them because we have had several people at Warriors of God tangle with these folks (they are very active on the Internet) from Westboro and were very frustrated that they seemed to not be capable of listening to anything else but what they themselves believed. It did not matter what scriptures that you brought to them or how that you tried to put their scriptures into context, they were not able to understand or maybe not willing to. This is the hallmark of a demonic obsession at the very least.

If you consider a group a pseudo-Christian CULT that is fanatically dedicated and emphatic over beliefs that are not backed up by the Bible, then this one qualifies.

Beware of them. And in this case, I would suggest not interacting with them unnecessarily. So far, I have not heard of one person ever getting through to them at all. They seem totally unable to accept any biblical scripture that goes against their belief system. And they will become abusive and insulting with extreme venom if you disagree with them.
