Yes, that really was an earthquake you felt early this morning.
According to U. S. Geological Society website, an earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale was recorded at 5:40 a.m. today, with the epicenter 2 miles south-southeast of Harrison, and three miles west-northwest of Bellefonte. "This event has been reviewed by a seismologist," the site states.
According to dispatcher supervisor Dee Conner of the Boone County Sheriff's Department, no injuries or damage have been reported.
Conner, who lives on First Street in Harrison, felt the earthquake at her house this morning.
"It's like the whole house shook," she said. "You could feel a vibration, enough to completely alert you. I thought a transformer had blown right by my house."
Conner said the graveyard shift dispatcher, Karen Hill, reported to her that she had several early-morning phone calls wondering what had happened, and by mid-morning, a number of callers had reported feeling the quake.
Beth Crouse, who lives on Highway 397, said she was awake when she heard a strange noise.
"I heard what sounded to me like a rumble," she said. "It kind of shook my windows, but it didn't exactly sound like thunder. I checked on the Internet to see if there was any earthquake activity close to here."
Daily Times photographer Lee Dunlap was already at work before dawn when he heard something odd.
"I was inside working on my computer, and I heard a very loud sound I thought was thunder or a plane crash," Dunlap said. I looked outside and didn't see anything, and listened to the scanner and didn't hear anything about it."
Daily Times publisher Jeff Christenson said he was walking at Lake Harrison this morning at 5:40 a.m. "I didn't feel a thing," he said.
